1st Grade
In The Sea of Numbers, students improve skills with number sense and operations (especially counting, addition, and subtraction), geometry, measurements, data, algebraic thinking, and mathematical reasoning.
Check out samples and detailed curriculum below ⬇️
-
Counting and Cardinality: Count to 120, starting from any number. Practice counting forward and backward.
Place Value: Understand the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Compare two-digit numbers.
Addition and Subtraction Basics: Use objects, drawings, and equations to add and subtract within 50. Introduce strategies such as decomposing numbers, borrowing and carrying over, and using the relationship between addition and subtraction.
-
Shapes and Their Attributes: Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres). Understand the differences between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation).
-
Telling Time: Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
Data Representation: Organize, represent, and interpret basic graphs
-
Patterns: Identify and create patterns using numbers, objects, and shapes. Understand patterns to help us predict and understand the world.
-
Encourage mathematical reasoning, asking questions like “How do you know?” or “Can you find another way?”
