The Land Beyond Numbers workbook covers 7th-8th grade math curriculum, building on concepts from A Bridge Beyond Numbers. We encourage parents to teach this two-part Frontier Series faster than public schools teach this material (typically over 3 years) to continue to accelerate your student’s learning.
Students will build their understanding of the number system (including irrational numbers, square roots, and scientific notation), algebra (especially working with linear functions), geometry (including volumes and transformations), and basic statistics and probability. Curriculum
1. Number System and Operations
Rational and irrational numbers: Understanding and comparing rational and irrational numbers.
Square roots and cube roots: Finding square roots and cube roots, particularly for perfect squares and cubes.
Scientific notation: Expressing numbers in scientific notation and converting between scientific notation and standard form.
2. Algebra
Expressions and equations: Simplifying algebraic expressions, solving linear equations and systems of linear equations.
Functions: Understanding functions as rules that assign each input exactly one output, graphing functions, and identifying characteristics such as slope and y-intercept.
Linear relationships: Exploring linear relationships, understanding slope as a rate of change, and y-intercept in the context of graphing linear equations.
3. Geometry
Understanding and application of the Pythagorean theorem.
Volume: Calculating the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres.
Transformations: Understanding translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations of figures on the coordinate plane.
4. Statistics and Probability
Analyzing and interpreting data: Understanding scatter plots, fitting a line to data, and making predictions based on trends.
Probability: Calculating the probability of compound events and understanding independent and dependent events.
5. Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
Engaging with word problems that require application of the above concepts.
Developing strategies for solving complex problems, including those that involve multiple steps or concepts.
